January 8-11, 2021

The past week brought great upheaval in Washington DC with reverberations throughout the country. A visit to Putney Landing brought a visual of upheaval that seemed to reflect my thinking as I had listened to the reports of the chaos in the Capitol.

Thin edged snow-covered ice juxtaposed the dark open waters.

Near the boat landing, a significant change in conditions had shifted the frozen water causing layers of the ice to be jammed together. I stood at the edge of the river, awestruck by the appearance of the resulting sculptures.

Ice crystals decorated the edge of the frozen water

I named this sculpture “Ice Bird”

I knew that in just a matter of hours this waterscape would change.

The Ice Bird would melt, the layered sheets soften.

I had witnessed a January transformation.
